Description: This painting is a celebration of the father/child bond. It was inspired by seeing fathers and sons enjoying a little alone time together looking a cool boats and buildings on a frigid day on the Baltimore Harbor. It struck me that activity was exactly what our society had been trying to encourage more men to do: to expand beyond their traditional role of bread winner to nurturer. It also struck me that there were very few paintings celebrating the father/child bond in the way that the mother/child bond was celebrated in what we call "Madonna paintings." Thus, I very consciously have worked to create a piece that is what I refer to as a "Padonna painting". Like in Madonna paintings, the image of the father and son is front and center and the child is in the protective embrace of his parent. To honor the fact that men are seen as more action oriented, I kept them in the context of touring on a boat, but modified and simplified the background to keep them the clear center of attention. I painted them facing away from the viewer to create a more universal image instead of making just a portrait of two people.
